James W. Hall, for 20 years one of South Florida's best crime novelists, grew up in Hopkinsville, Ky., near Fort Campbell. Boys went barefoot downtown, and Nashville was the closest big city. The barbershop where young Jim got his hair cut still sported a spittoon, and not just for show. It seems, from a distance of 1,200 miles and four decades, as far from South Florida as you could get.
